BAMS or Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine is an Ayurvedic science program. BAMS course duration is 5.5 years long, taught at the undergraduate level at Ayurvedic colleges. Typically taught at Ayurvedic institutes, BAMS is all about Ayurvedic medicine and how to treat diseases according to the alternative medicinal system. One of the more unique parts of the BAMS course details is that there are four professionals over 5 years. All medical courses in India including BAMS require a qualifying score in a national or state-level entrance examination score, the NEET.
Most of the same reasons that students have to pursue a medical science degree apply to the BAMS course as well. However, the biggest reason to pursue BAMS is for the fascination or interest to know more about it. The course syllabus is based on an ancient study system dating back years. Individuals who have a genuine interest and love for Ayurveda and its knowledge would thrive in BAMS and make a successful career in it. Students who do not have high enough scores to pursue MBBS or BDS will be eligible for BAMS. Moreover, the course fees for BAMS are considerably lower than other courses.
BAMS syllabuses have both Sanskrit lessons and modern science lessons. Some semesters out of all cover professional courses making for four professional years. The first year has several subjects like anatomy, physiology, Rachana Sharir, and Kriya Sharir. During the second year, the BAMS course teaches subjects like Biology, Roga Nidan, Charak Samhita, and Rasashastra. The final year has subjects involving surgery, ENT, gynecology, and obstetrics. There are even specializations to choose from and a mandatory internship to complete as well before graduating.
BAMS graduates can choose an area of Ayurveda science or specialization to work in after graduating. Students can choose one depending on their likes and career goals. Some of these specializations are Sharir Rachna, Padartha Vigyana, Swasth Vritta, Rasa Shastra, Sharir kriya, Agad tantra, Charak Samhita, Roga & Vikriti Vigyana, Prasuti, and Stri Roga, etc. Other areas of concentration include Kayachikitsa, Shalya Tantra, Shalakya Tantra, and also Charak Samhita. The BAMS doctor working in a hospital will work in a specific department depending on their area of specialization.
Like other undergraduate courses, there is also a set of BAMS eligibility criteria. These criteria are necessary to be considered eligible for all the admissions rounds at chosen universities. All applicants must have completed their class 12th examinations in the Science stream from a recognized educational board. Furthermore, the applicant must have scored at least 55% to 60% aggregate score in Physics, Biology, and Chemistry subjects. For reserved category students, there is a 5% relaxation in the aggregate score. Once all these eligibility criteria are met, candidates can attend further admission rounds.
As mentioned above, admissions to the BAMS course are through the NEET national level examination. In particular, candidates have to take the NEET UG and secure a spot on the merit list. This is a highly competitive examination and considerable preparation is needed in the school level Science subjects. Thereafter, depending on the test score, candidates have to attend the counseling round at the shortlisted college. During the counseling round, applicants present their documents and if all goes well, the candidate is admitted to the BAMS course.
Ayurveda is popular in India and relied upon by thousands of people. There is plenty of options in terms of job profiles for a BAMS doctor across the country and also there are higher education options. Ayurveda also has branches or specializations that each BAMS doctor can choose to work in. This same specialization can be chosen for higher education. Some options for the same are MD in Ayurveda and a Ph.D. in Ayurveda after that, both of which have been elaborated on below.
Generally, BAMS graduates work in the capacity of a BAMS doctor. There is a mandatory internship period to complete before individuals start working after which they work as full-time doctors. The average salary for this role is around INR 4,00,000 LPA which can go up to INR 7,80,000 LPA and higher with more experience.1 Depending on the employer, the BAMS graduate can also work in the capacity of an Ayurvedic Physician or Medical Officer. As a Sales representatives, they will help promote sales and get clients for Ayurvedic products and services. Alternatively, there is always the option to go into education and work as a professor. However, for this role, employers could require prior work experience in the field.
Salary scales for any profile are an important aspect to consider. Especially since the BAMS course fee is high and a considerable amount of investment is done, the salary must give a sufficient return on investment. For reference, here the salary of an Ayurvedic doctor is considered from freshers to experienced. Ayurvedic Doctors earn an average pay of INR 3,60,000 LPA. Between one to four years of experience, the salary is INR 3,80,000 LPA. Thereafter between five to six years, it is INR 4,00,000 LPA while for seven to eight years it is INR 4,40,000 LPA. Candidates with over 10 years of experience can comfortably earn around INR 6,50,000 LPA
As written above, in terms of higher education courses after BAMS, there is an MD and Ph.D. courses. There are also shorter-term courses like diplomas concentrating on an area of Ayurveda. For each of these courses, there are several options of concentrations to choose from. Higher education means more qualifications which thereafter opens up better-paid jobs for the BAMS student.
Ayurveda is not just a course option for students who did not make it to the traditional medical course. There are years of history backing Ayurveda and it successfully treats thousands of people every day for different ailments.
