Pancha Mahabhutas are the five great elements which Ayurveda believe to contribute to the universe and human body. These 5 principles of Ayurveda are as follows:
These five elements are together believed to contribute to three different energy modules of the human body, namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha. This three energy theory is Tridosha Theory.
Getting to know the Pancha Mahabhutas will help you understand the tridosha theory which is one of the fundamental principles of Ayurveda based on which diagnosis and treatments are extended to patients.
Here are the three doshas and their role in the human biological system.
Doshas | Contributing Pancha Mahabhuta Elements | Biological Role Play |
---|---|---|
Vata | Air and Space | Governs Movement, Communication & Creativity |
Pitta | Agni and Jalam | Governs Metabolism, Digestion and Transformation |
Kapha | Jalam and Prithvi | Governs Structure, Stability and Lubrication |
Imbalance in these doshas are considered the contributing factor for health ailments and disorder, as per Ayurveda. The balanced constitution of three doshas is called Prakriti.
Each body is different with varying proportions of doshas. So, as per ayurveda principles, understanding one's constitution, i.e., prakriti is very important to analyse and diagnose the human individual for any health conditions and to progress with treatments.
These are the basic principles of Ayurveda. Beyond these, an Ayurvedic physician should also know the following factors.
Ayurveda recognises seven primary tissues or dhatus in the human body namely plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, marrow, and reproductive tissue. Knowing these dhatus is essential to comprehensively understand doshas and its effect on these dhatus for diagnosis and treatment.
Ayurveda also focuses on Malas or waste out of the body and its proper excretion for proper health of the human body. Ayurveda examines Malas of patients for understanding the medical ailments as well.
Srotas are circulating channels for nutrients, fluids and waste products. Ayurveda also focuses on keeping these Srotas in a clean pathway for better metabolism of the human body.
